I hadn't heard -- Buccigross's opening column of the season mentions that Jack Falla, author of "Home Ice: Reflections on Backyard Rinks and Frozen Ponds", died a couple weeks ago of a heart attack.

If you like hockey (especially if you play), and you haven't read the book, get it now.

We beat the Desperados 4-1 tonight. I had the game-winning goal, so already I've scored more goals than last season :-) (Our previous goalie is back this season.)

I haven't blogged much about rec league hockey lately... this season is my first one as a full-time goalie, and I got off to a bit of a rough start. In our first game we played the Blues (I referred to them as the best team last season) and got shellacked. We faced the 2 seed in the finals tonight (although I think they are better than the team that eked out a first place finish this season). They have a couple ringer players who are clearly a notch (or several notches) better than anyone else in the league. So it's a bit more sore today, but I only really notice it when I stretch my arm in the direction that the shoulder moved during the collision -- I was rotated such that the impact was more on the back of the shoulder, so e.g. reaching with my left arm across my body causes pain.
